Opportunity : Journal of Responsible Technology – Managing Editor

Background

The Journal of Responsible Technology was launched in the summer of 2020, as the successor to the ORBIT journal. It is published by Elsevier and run by ORBIT.

ORBIT is looking for a Managing Editor who will have a crucial role in shaping, developing and promoting the journal and the academic community that supports it.

The journal will be able to pay an honorarium of £400 per month in recognition of the efforts of the managing editor. The expectation is that the managing editor will spend approximately 1 day per week working on journal-related activities.  

Job description

The Managing Editor of the Journal of Responsible Technology will be responsible for:

  • Working closely with the editors in chief on all aspects of organisation and running of the journal
    • Regular status review and update to the editors in chief with regards to the status of all papers under review
    • Initial screening of all new submissions for suitability, identification of potential reviewers, and suggestions of suitable decisions
    • Monitoring of review progress for all papers, which includes chasing authors or reviewers, where necessary. 
  • Increase visibility of journal and outputs by
    • Developing and implementing social media strategy (focus on Twitter)
    • Developing and disseminating call for special issues
    • Proposing bespoke special issues to potential editors
  • Supporting the journal community, e.g. by 
    • Serving as first port of call for all questions from the editorial review board
    • Identifying unresponsive review board members and their possible removal from the board
    • Proposal for new review board members
    • Organising meetings of review board members, typically co-located with relevant conferences / events or online meetings
  • Serving as first port of call for interaction with authors and potential authors
  • Reviewing and updating relevant journal policies
